“I Don’t Want to Go to School Today!”

  “我爱游戏中国今天不想去上学!”

  作者:Charlene Lilly

As we move into our second month of school here at Noble Kids-House,爱游戏体育平台 it is a wonderful thing to see our children becoming more comfortable and confident in their learning environment. Students are beginning to deepen their friendships, engage with new Montessori materials, and find a place for themselves in the classroom community. More and more, our teachers are excited to hear back from parents that their child went home saying, “Mom! Dad! I had such a great day at school today!”

There are hard days for children though. These are the days when parents come to us, frustrated to hear their child wake up and say, “Mom, I don’t want to go to school today!” Why don’t they want to go? Did something happen? Don’t they have friends to play with and fun work to do every day? The impact is the same for all parents – hearing your child doesn’t want to go to school brings on feelings of frustration, anxiety and stress.

What’s most important to recognize first is that this is a normal developmental situationthat occurs for nearly all children, particularly between the ages of 3-4 years old. Refusing to go to school is not a sign of abnormality, nor is it a behavioral problem. We must consider it a reaction to feelings of frustration, which often come as a child grows up and begins to encounter new challenges and experiences.

At this stage of life, children are beginning to make fundamental transitions from dependence to independence. They are learning to take care of their own self (dressing their selves, brushing their own teeth, eating on their own), learning to make their own friends, and learning to come to terms with their own sense of feelings. There will be good days – but there will also be bad days, and this is often when we hear the cry, “I don’t want to go to school!”

Children are social in their nature, and do inherently have with them a desire to learn and interact with friends. All the same, there are days when these desires can come into conflict with the wish to stay at home with Mom and Dad. It can be overwhelming sometimes to be at school – to be faced with so many social and intellectual challenges each day. Even for us adults, there are days when we feel it might be better to just stay at home and avoid the challenges we may have to face at work.

Parents should remember that the young child is still navigating the world of communication, building on their language and learning how to connect the feelings they have inside with the words they can share on the outside. This means that often, when they feel overwhelmed or frustrated with situations at school, they often do not have the ability to communicate exactly what it is they are overwhelmed by. They tell parents, “I don’t want to go to school”, but parents must also understand that there may be many interpretations and truths behind this statement.

The greatest goal for our teachers here at Noble Kids-House is to provide for your child a happy and supportive environment for learning. If you find your child is feeling frustrated and having a hard time going to school, here are some suggestions to consider:爱游戏平台

  Continue Going to School

While we understand your concern for your child, but we hope you can consider this:If your child stops going to school, it will be so much harder for them to go back to school once you decide the time has come to return. You can work together on this challenge with the support of your teachers while you go to school – but in keeping them enrolled, you demonstrate to the child a fundamental confidence that the school is a safe and positive place. The attitude of the parent will have a significant influence on the child’s feelings towards the school. Only if you suspect the child has a serious illness should you consider keeping them at home.

  Try and Identify the Problem

In most cases, a child telling you they do not want to go to school is not necessarily an indicator of a major problem. However, it is still worthwhile spending time with the child trying to figure out what brought on these emotions. Consider the child’s health – a lack of sleep or an illness could be bothering them. However, if it is not this, then we can consider whether something may be upsetting your child, or causing them to feel afraid.

Parents should be careful not to lead children in asking questions about their frustration. If you ask questions like, “Are you bored?” or “Do you not like your school?” you will often not receive honest answers. Instead, try to ask open-ended questions that will encourage the child to talk about their experiences, such as, “If you could do anything to change your school, what would you change?” or “What do you think would make your class even better than it is now?” In this way, you can really gain a sense of the child’s own perspective and acquire more accurate information to work on the problem at hand.

  Talk With Teachers

Never be afraid to discuss this challenge with your child’s teachers. We are in the classroom with your children, observing them and working with them all day long. Teachers often are aware of situations that may be affecting for your child. Moreover, parent communication can help your teacher be more aware of your child’s feeling so they can make any necessary changes in the learning environment. Cooperation between parents and teachersis one of the best ways to help a child work towards getting over any challenges or frustrations they may be feeling.

  Encourage Conflict-Resolution Strategies

Children at this age not only have a limited vocabulary, but as well limited abilities in resolving conflicts they may experience in the classroom. Conflicts they encounter with friends may end up overwhelming the child and causing them to resist going back to school. Help your child to learn to identify the problem they are going through, andguide them in solving it on their own. We often ask the children the following three questions: What was the problem you faced? How did this problem make you feel? If this kind of problem comes up again in the future, how do you think you could deal with it? In this way, you can help to provide your child with the skills they will need to deal with future challenges, and support them in their peaceful return back to school.

Show an Interest in School and Your Child’s Learning

The attitude of a parent can have a strong effect on the emotions a child develops for themselves towards school and their learning experience.Hence, if a parent expresses genuine interest in school, and in hearing what it is their child is learning, the child is far more likely to be confident and excited about learning and school. If you find your child is unable to vocalize what it is they learned that day, make an effort to notice when the child shares or does something new they have learned – and ask them to teach you as well! If your child comes home and is suddenly able to fold their own clothing, spend laundry day folding clothing together. If your child shows a newfound interest in turtles, find some books all about turtles and learn the names of the parts of a turtle together! By demonstrating your own interest in learning, and sharing experiences in learning together with your child, you will guide your child in developing a much deeper appreciation for everything that they do each day at school.

We are so proud of your children, and all the hard work they engage with in the Montessori classroom. Each day your child learns and grows and matures, and we here at Noble Kids-House work our hardest to provide your child with the most supportive and loving environment in which your child can experience this development. We hope parents will work together with us to ensure that we can continue to give your children the support and encouragement they need to grow happily and healthy here with us!
